The ancient agricultural town of Petra is 11 km east of Sineu and is situated in the fertile central plain of Es Pla in Eastern Mallorca. Petra's most famous son is the Franciscan friar and explorer Junipero Serra who played a major role in the settlement of Spanish North America. There is a museum with some rooms devoted to Serra. There is also a series of Majolica panels depicting his life and missionary work in the upper town in a side street off the Calle Mayor near the church of Sant Bernat.
